Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) celebrates and mobilizes the millions of
young people who improve their communities each day of the year through
service. Established in 1988, Global Youth Service Day is the largest service event in
the world, and the only day of service dedicated to children and youth.
In April 2013, the City Youth Council of Toronto hosted the first ever GYSD event in Canada
thanks to the initiative taken by Youth Councillor Mary Zhu.
The first annual event was hosted in Members’ Lounge at Toronto City Hall. We had close to 30 organizations represented, with a waiting list due to space constraints, and close to 300 attendees.
